I Owe My Entire Career To Taking A Year Off And Moving To Thailand
I Owe my Entire Career to Taking a Year Off and Moving to Thailand It was the top of my senior year in school. And I had two selections: OK, looking again, there were more than two decisions. Nonetheless, I knew I needed an adventure: an off-the-crushed-path experience. Not being stuck in a cubicle. This is how I eventually discovered myself educating English in Thailand. My experience residing and dealing there led me to where I am right now. (Hint: Where I am âtodayâ has nothing to do with what I thought I wanted, and Thailand confirmed me that.) This is why I went, and the way it modified me. 1. I Was Unsure of What I Wanted to Do With my Life I am still uncertain, in some ways, of âwhat I need to do with my life.â And I imagine we, as people, are continuously evolving and always changing what we want to do. Nevertheless, when I graduated back in 2012, I was very uncertain of what I wished to do. My problem, should you might name it that, is that I like every little thing. Itâs onerous for me to stay focused and outline targetsâ"though, with maturity, that has turn into easier. I all the time liked every little thing I studied at school: economics, statistics, English, and so on. Eventually, I ended up majoring in historical past. Why? Because my dad told me âit was respected.â Still unsure of what I wanted to do with my life, I was nervous to leap into a profession I disliked, so I traveled to Thailand instead. 2. I Feared Jumping Into a Full-Time Jobâ"and Hating It I recall looking at job descriptions my senior 12 months and saying to myself: âNo.â Just no. Nothing sounded appealing; nothing seemed like I may try this for the remainder of my life. Or even a 12 months. But unlike a âreal job,â instructing in Thailand was a comparatively quick-time period gig: six to 12 months. I favored it as a result of I had the option to increase my keep if I wanted to. Or heck, if things went unhealthy, I could all the time leave on the spot. Knowing this made teaching overseas far more interesting. three. I Always Had a Passion for East-Asian Culture Despite all my uncertainty, I knew I liked Asia. After finding out abroad in Shanghai previously, my complete faculty profession turned devoted to Asia. Following that, I spun projects to one way or the other relate to Asia in any means possible. So for me, to show in Thailand wasnât a completely random determination. In truth, I was dying to go back to Asia. To travel more, to reside there once more. If youâre like meâ"uncertain about a lot, however have an unwavering interest in one thing, I highly recommend exploring that. Maybe itâs health, or cooking. Perhaps itâs skiing. Whatever it could be, you gainedât regret pursuing a ardour as you search for the work that fulfills you. Even if it doesnât pan such as you had deliberate. four. I Thought I Wanted to Go to Grad School While still being uncertain about so much, I was pretty sure that I wanted to go to grad school. (I think most people who find themselves unsure of what they want to do assume they want to go to grad college.) Specifically, I thought I would study financial growth in East Asia. So it made sense to go back to Asia and acquire extra experience living there earlier than heading to graduate faculty. I never did make it to graduate college. And I couldnât be happier about it. Moreover, right now I do nothing associated to East Asia or economics. Advice to others desirous to go to grad faculty (or law college) right out of school: Wait. Get a job in the businessâ"see if itâs something you actually need to do. After I was finished instructing for six months, this is exactly what I did: I obtained a job at a Thai assume tank of their financial improvement department. It was my âdream job,â or so I thought. Turns out: I was useless wrong. I only lasted in that role for 3 months. It w asnât what I thought it might be. But it was there that I first started instructing myself to codeâ"and beloved it. As this realization set it, I dropped the GRE lessons I had been taking, in addition to the numerous hours per week I spent learning for the test. I asked myself: âWhy am I finding out outdated vocabulary phrases, after I could possibly be learning real-life skills?â and began to show myself how to build primary web sites. I would never have found the work I even have and love now if Iâd set straight off for grad school first. 5. I Could Go on a Long Trip, Because I Had Few Major Responsibilities Sure, my boyfriend was not jumping for pleasure on the thought of me being gone, in exotic Thailand, for over six months. But as a wholesome, 22-yr-old lady, I knew I wanted to explore. And more importantly, I had little responsibilities: Fortunately, I had the attention to comprehend that this was a fleeting opportunity. And to take it. Your early 20s is probably one of the best time to journey. It is a sweet spot of little responsibility, coupled with youth and total well being. And simply enough cash to get by. I donât care what business youâre in (heck, now I am in tech): Travel. And do it while youâre young. Thereâs a thousand excuses you can also make about why ânowâ just isn't a great time. But belief me, as you get older, itâs solely going to become tougher. And the following thing you realize, youâll be in your 40s or 50s wondering why you never made it to Europe. Sure, you'll be able to journey when you retire. (And many individuals do. I plan on being consi dered one of them.) But itâs not the identical as if youâre younger and unbound from all of the obligations that come with age. 6. I Wanted a Challenge At the end of it all, I needed a problem. And thatâs what I received. Yes, Thailand is enjoyable. But after I was educatingâ"which I was for most of my time thereâ"I was in the course of Thailand. I was not living on an exotic beach or partying every night time in Bangkok. Rather, I was fully isolated as certainly one of two Westerners in my city. Even extra, I: When I decided to teach in Thailand, I didnât realize what I was signing up for. The fact is: I tried to not think about it and simply take care of it when I got there. But to this present day, I attempt to embrace this mindset: Take action, donât think about all the âwhat ifs.â Like many people, I are inclined to overanalyze selections. And, consequently, fail to take action. One of my favourite sayings is, âGood issues take time. Great things occur suddenly.â The riskiest selections (inside good cause) are usually the most effective in the long run. And if not, itâs a lesson lived. As long as you walk away learning something new, and might deliver this data with you into the longer term, it was a worthwhile experience. 7. Living Alone in Thailand Forced Me to Find Myself In the top, spending nine months in Thailand modified me as an individual and it changed my life and profession trajectory. Afterwardâ"and even nonetheless, to todayâ"I had a sense of confidence and independence from that experience. Sometimes, I still tell myself, âI fought off wild canines! I received this!â Ultimately, going outdoors of your consolation zone permits you to develop as an individual. By itself, touring alone or working someplace new alone is empowering and difficult, but most of all, rewarding. Whether you decide to journey like I did, move to a new metropolis for a brand new profession, and even do something completely out of the ordinaryâ"like take an improv class or skydive: Being scared is good for you. Being scared, or dwelling with uncertainty, pushes you to the following degree. It permits for new self-discoveriesâ"discoveries that just donât happen whenever youâre sitting in the identical workplace, or living in the same metropolis, in the identi cal house, with the same folks. For me, living alone in Thailand for 9 months led me to the place I am right now: doing content technique and entrance-finish development. As disparate as the two may seemâ"financial improvement and web site design and content material techniqueâ"being utterly alone for the first time gave me the chance to explore areas I had never thought-about, which I now consider my best interests and passions. When youâre completely alone, you be taught lots about yourself. When you possibly canât communicate with individuals around you, you are forced to âcommunicateâ with your self. Despite it taking a number of months, being alone in Thailand led me down a path of self-discovery. If it werenât for Thailand, I wouldnât be where I am right now. The newest trends in company benefits and perks
The newest trends in company benefits and perks What do companies like Google, Facebook, Wegmanâs and Workday have in common? Theyâre known as âgreat places to work,â famous for lavishing employees with eye-popping perks. But does it pay to invest in generous benefits? What does a company have to do to gain a competitive advantage? And whatâs driving the trend toward parental leave replacing free food as the must-have work perk? To find out, I talked to Michael Marty, Care.comâs vice president and general manager of Operations and Business Services. Mikeâs Workplace Solutions team partners with corporate clients who offer access to Care.comâs digital platform and family care experts as an employer-provided benefit to their employees. Why the theme of âcompanies that careâ as those that will succeed in 2016? Itâs not a new trend that when companies care about employees itâs good for their workers, their customers, shareholders, and their bottom lines. Thereâs definitely momentum building around many of these issues. Weâre coming off a year in which we saw company after company â" and weâre talking about big names, like Microsoft, Netflix, Virgin â" announce expanded parental leave benefits. And then the data continue to show the value employees place on work-life balance and family care benefits, and how this can impact an employer in big ways. Companies recognized as âBest Places to Workâ regularly outperform and deliver better stock returns than competitors. Glassdoorâs chief economist recently reported that despite the flat market in 2015, the siteâs 2015 Best Places to Work winners showed share price increases 2.8 times the return of the overall market over the course of the year. The bottom line is, companies that care arenât making emotional decisions; taking care of employees is sound business. What other ways could companies support employees beyond paid maternity/paternity leave? Elemental to every company that cares is the understanding that employees donât check their personal and family lives at the door when they come to work. Life doesnât work like that â" and it doesnât have to. A Better Benefits survey of employees at Fortune 1000 companies reported that 90 percent of employees have left work, and 30 percent have cut back by more than six hours per week, due to family responsibilities. So whatever you as an employer are able to do to reduce the friction in your employeesâ lives outside of work â" whether thatâs helping to find a nanny for a newborn or offering flexible hours to allow for a yoga class â" that benefit, perk or informal policy will help your employees to be more present, productive, and engaged while theyâre at work. Is the need for elder care support as important for companies to provide as is child care support? Our population demographics are shifting and the importance of elder care support is growing. Nearly half of adults in their 40s and 50s fall into what we call the âSandwich Generation,â meaning theyâre providing some level of care for both their children and aging parents. The number of âsandwichedâ employees is only going to increase, considering there are 10,000 baby boomers turning 65 every day on average and the population of Americans 65 and older is expected to hit 55 million by 2020. The issue about senior care is that itâs unpredictable, sudden, and wrought with emotion. When you have an employee experiencing an elder care challenge, often he or she is searching for information on what to do, where to find help, and even how to have these difficult conversations with their parents or siblings. In the face of our looming senior care crisis, the companies that care are the ones who step up and provide more than a standard, reactive Employee Assistance Program (EAP). The good news is, we are seeing a growing trend, according to data from the Families and Work Institute, of companies who are beginning to offer elder care assistance benefits. What can smaller companies do to support their workforce if they cannot match what larger companies are doing? There isnât a one-size-fits-all approach to be a company that cares. Whatâs really important is to consult with your employees to evaluate their requests and use the data to inform the decisions you make about how to have the most impact with your investments in employee benefits and work-life initiatives. And technology is giving companies of all sizes a lot of options for creating flexible, scalable solutions for taking care of employees. For example, you might not be able to afford to subsidize an on-site child care center, but it could be within your budget to provide a technology-driven resource and referral option that would meet the same basic needs. However, amidst the a great many different prerequisites that should be met in the work environment, being a 'cooperative person' frequently gets tossed to the wayside. Actually when you focus on the accomplishment of your organization and not simply your very own prosperity, it is you who receives the benefits. What it Means You can't be a cooperative person except if you initially comprehend what it implies. Being an individual from a group implies that you are taking a stab at your own prosperity, however for the achievement of everyone around you. All together for any work environment to progress nicely, the whole condition should be adequate, not simply your own presentation. This can show in any number of ways. It can mean remaining late to help another colleague with their piece of an undertaking. It can mean covering somebody's work day. Essentially, it implies you can't simply consider yourself, you must be happy to help other people. Why it Matters On the off chance that you are simply entering the workforce, it might appear to be unreasonable to stress over others when you're simply attempting to make your own particular manner in this unfriendly world. Yet, at long last, it's dealing with others that gets you where you have to go. I took in the estimation of cooperation the most difficult way possible, and it cost me no doubt. I worked for a huge organization with an extremely affectionate group. Around a similar time I was graduating, I was up for an advancement, and my opposition was a kindred collaborator who had a similar activity as me. We were both acceptable at what we did. The distinction? I was consistently on schedule; she was frequently late. I carried out my responsibility incredibly well; she accomplished less individual work, however helped other people. I was in every case sharp and rested at work; she was worn out from going out with colleagues the prior night. I was certain I was getting that advancement; she got it. Why? The appropriate response is basic; she was all the more popular. Despite the fact that I was actually progressively proficient, she got the advancement since she had put herself totally into the organization, while I was simply paying special mind to myself. She was a cooperative person; I wasn't. What You Can Do So how might you be a cooperative person? Simply treat your associates like family. In the event that your kin were stalled with work and required an additional hand, wouldn't you give them one? Presently apply that rule to your associates. You don't need to go insane doing individuals favors, however recollect that those favors pay off. In case you're up for an advancement, your supervisor will recollect the time you drove an hour to go get supplies when they were unavailable. So whenever you see 'cooperative person' on a rundown of prerequisites for an occupation or temporary position you're applying to, recall that those two little words have a major effect.

Video interview tips
Video interview tips by Amber Rolfe Everythingâs done online these days. Even interviewsâ¦The possibility of being invited to a video interview is on the rise, and this will either fill you with fear of the unknown, relief that you wonât have to leave the comfort of your house, or maybe even a bit of both.A video interview will have a large amount of similarities to a regular face-to-face interview, but here are some specific video interview tips to help you get started:Prepare your surroundingsMake sure you choose a quiet space for the interview, and tidy the area so it looks presentable. Itâs always good to have a clear, uncluttered space to help you to concentrate on the task at hand, and to remind you that youâre in a formal situation. Also, get rid of any potentially embarrassing or offensive belongings lying around. Your interviewer will be able to see more than you think, and the smallest distraction in the background that you thought wasnât in view could give too much away about your personal life, or reflect badly on you.Note: Itâs OK to like Star trek, but itâs not OK to have your entire bedroom decorated with memorabilia (complete with Spock costume) when youâre on a professional video call.Look the partUltimately, a video interview is supposed to follow the same rules and format as a face-to-face interview, so itâs a good idea to wear the same outfit youâd wear if you were going to the workplace. Being professionally dressed will also put you in the right mind-set, and stop you from falling into an overly comfortable âIâm at home in bedâ state.Since youâll be sat down, and expectedly, only viewable from the waist up, it might be tempting to wear interview-appropriate clothes on top and some kind of pyjamas on the bottom. But, as comfy as it sounds, we donât recommend you do this. What if you have to get up? Or the cat decides that now is the time for his amateur acrobatics, involving him jumping on the table and knocking the camera f ocus downwards? Yeah, you know it could happen.Avoid any potential interruptionsCall a babysitter, switch off your phone, tell your friends youâre out, and so on.Awkward interruptions that interfere with the smooth running of your interview are best avoided as much as possible. You want an interviewer to see youâre serious about their role, so show youâre prepared.Always turn off the TV, music, and close other programmes on your computer. You might really need to catch up on your Netflix binge watching that you often use as âbackground noiseâ, but now is not the time. And finally, ensure those you live with are aware. The last thing you want is someone screaming your name at the top of their voice, asking if youâd rather have Chinese or Indian for dinner. Itâs a tough choice, we get it. But one to be discussed after the interview.Look at the camera, not the screenEye contact is important in any kind of interview, but video calls make it a lot harder to follow, because, where do you look?If you look directly at the interviewer on the screen, it might feel like youâre giving good eye contact, but all theyâll see is you looking down. Focus on looking directly at the camera instead, at least for the most-part of the interview. Also, remember to smile.Make use of notes, but donât rely on them too muchGreat news: looking at your notes is acceptable in a video interview. As long as you do it subtly, thereâs no reason you canât have handy tips nearby. Use them to help you answer any difficult questions or remember specific facts about the role or company. But donât use them as a script, or youâll probably sound like a monotonous robot with no natural feelings. And you wonât be able to look at the camera at the same time.Remember: body language is still a thingAlthough youâre not in the same room as your interviewer physically, body language remains important. Sit up straight, look attentive and enthusiastic.Be aware of the limitations in s ound quality and volume in this situation you want your interviewer to hear you clearly. Donât cover your mouth, remain conscious of your hand-to-face gestures, and try and keep your hands at bay in a safe place, AKA your knees.Sure, use hand movements to emphasise a point if it feels natural, but donât overdo it. You also shouldnât force it just because you donât know what to do with your hands.Top tip: Hold a pen to occupy your hands if that stops the random arm flailing.PracticeHaving a video interview trial run is not only important for gaging the best body language and practicing your answers, but also to test your equipment. Because letâs face it, technology isnât always the most trustworthy of things, and you never know when it might decide to malfunction.Check the best angle for your webcam, the best height of your chair, and the speed of your connection. Because no one can pull off the blurry, constantly freezing, pixelated look without looking like part of a b ad 80s arcade game.Find a job What Where Search JobsSign up for more Career AdviceSign up for moreCareer Advice Please enter a valid email addressmessage hereBy clicking Submit you agree to the terms and conditions applicable to our service and acknowledge that your personal data will be used in accordance with our privacy policy and you will receive emails and communications about jobs and career related topics. Personal Branding Weekly - Have Strings Attached Always - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career
Personal Branding Weekly - Have Strings Attached Always - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Iâll best illustrate this with the use of a listening-to-the-radio analogy. If you listen to the radio, you have a couple of (or more) stations you like to listen to, maybe for the music they play or the programs they feature. However, should you hear something you donât like (songs you donât appreciate, too many commercials), odds are youâll change the station. Even more displeasing is where thereâs too much static noise on a particular station, in which case you hurriedly find the next best station and escape the static! Always having strings attached to the content you provide Blending that analogy to our topic of the day, your personal brand is the radio station, and what you present to your audience is like the music/content that radio stations provide. If the audience likes what you have to offer (informative content, helpful material and advice), theyâll tune in to your brand. Noise in your personal branding comes when you start being confusing in your messaging. Messages that are disconnected from your brand, are more likely to chase your audience away. Constantly going âsalesyâ on your audience is bound to push them away as well, much like a station playing too many commercials will drive listeners away. This often happens when youâre focused diligently on garnering a âreturn on your investmentâ into your personal brand. The audience wants messages that are relevant, useful, informative, and valuable yet authentic to your personal brand. How do you help, with a product or a service, a specific audience? If you can communicate helpful hints or educate others from your strength area, then your audience sees that your messages are relevant and helpful. When they see you as someone who provides helpful, valuable information theyâll seek you out for further business. A list of ingredients does not make a chef. Go ahead! Share what goes into the secret sauce! [tweet this] The trick is to balance the helpful content with the marketing pitch. Asking every once in a while for customers to buy from you is acceptable, as itâs a good way to generate business. However, let the ratio of good content in relation to marketing be favorable in terms of the former, and youâll be keeping your âlistenersâ tuned in all the time. Personal Brands - Dress to Impress Not Dress for Success - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career
Personal Brands - Dress to Impress Not Dress for Success - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Building space by Norbert Lov; Creative Commons Listening to a co-worker, Kristen, she shared, âGrowing up, I was a lucky child. I had parents that never forced me into a role. They regularly taught me to be happy and to love myself no matter what others would think. But, more importantly, they instilled in me the fact that books cannot be judged by their covers. Itâs because of this I never cared about what I wore since only the people worth getting to know wouldnât care about your appearance. However, as I grew older and met more and more people, I found there was something more to the idea of dressing to impress. Where the not caring about appearance made it extremely easy to find those that were actually worth getting to know, caring about my appearance allowed me to impress those that would have otherwise paid me no mind.â In reality, not paying attention to appearance is a harder feat to accomplish. We, after all, have been hardwired to care very much about how people look. Back before modern society, a look was what helped you determine if the human was healthy or sick, friendly or hostile. What you determined in that one look helped you figure out if avoiding them would actually lead to a better chance of survival for you. Yet, even with this undeniable truth of our lineage, many of us rage and rail against societal requirements. Either caused by jealousy, fear, misunderstanding or a sordid past, avoiding dressing for occasions is usually caused by some sort of negative emotion. As hard as this can be to overcome, if you want to succeed, you canât ignore the fashion requirements of your industry any longer. People judge you as soon as they see you. Why would you want to give them a negative perception that you would then have to fight to overcome? Dress for Your Work Fashion is one of those things that is very different based on what industry you work in. This is why dressing for success means very different things across every field. For instance, would the medical professional wear a gown worn by a starlet at the Met Gala? No. Should that medical professional wear such a gown to their own industryâs celebration, they would no doubt be met with awkward smiles and confused stares. Dressing to impress is far more than adhering to societal rules. Itâs a way to exhibit your knowledge of your industryâs culture and how you can adapt to it while still maintaining your individuality. It exemplifies that you can pick up on the subtle social cues in a way that promotes both harmony and success. Such understanding is a must the higher up the ladder one climbs. Showing that you know how to deal with the best means you have a better chance of leading the industry to greatness than those that refuse to adapt. Practice Makes Perfect When I first learned about the expectation of dressing up to events I didnât find important, it was through a very rude shaming in public. This person tore me down in front of others. However, she couldnât be avoided because she was a prominent figure in the community. Truth be told, once my ego had healed, I found a kernel of truth in what she had done. The method was uncalled for, sure, but she had her reasons. Dressing correctly for the event in question is a sign of respect for the event itself. Itâs a physical manifestation of your understanding of what that event is, its history and why you were invited to attend. By refusing to dress up for it, you insult the institution, and many do this unknowingly. They believe theyâre fighting those that have shamed them when, in reality, itâs seen as a fight against the institution itself. Instead of giving up, I adapted. Slowly but surely I learned. I still made mistakes by overdressing or underdressing, but each event I gleaned something new. I began watching the other people and studying their clothes. I began analyzing colors and fit so I could better see what would work for my own personality. I also kept testing what I could get away with not doing and still be considered fashionable. Now an intermediate of industry fashion, Iâm finding more success than before. You have approximately seven seconds to make a great first impression. Assume five of those seconds revolve around your clothes.
